Big NZQCF updates are already underway, and 2026 is when many providers will feel the impact.
If you are a PTE or training organisation, staying ahead now will save rework later.

The most practical shift is the revised level descriptors.
They give clearer visibility of what graduates can actually do, in vocational, practice-based and transferable terms.

The new skills sub-domains are:

  1. Practice and performance
  2. Critical thinking
  3. Collaboration
  4. Communication

That clarity supports portability, so your qualification story makes sense to local employers and global partners.

Micro-credentials also move from ‘nice idea’ to a formal pathway.
They let you certify targeted skills in smaller packages, typically 5 to 40 credits.

There’s also a registration reality check for PTEs.
To stay active, you need to deliver at least one NZQA-approved programme or micro-credential within any 12-month period.

If you want a clean action plan, SAARA can help you map outcomes, tighten evidence and update documentation without losing momentum.
